Stunning Interiors at Oak House No.1 – luxury hotel in the Cotswolds
From the outside the fine Georgian house seems like a typical Cotswolds building with it’s honeycomb coloured stones, a charming and elegant demeanour but not giving away any secrets of what stark contrast lies behind the solid Georgian blue front door. Once inside your senses will be overloaded by the sheer opulence and luxury all around. Stunning interiors at are of course what one would expect from a luxury hotel in the Cotswolds, but that is just the beginning for this is a very special, ‘one off’ place lovingly curated over many years. The interior design is in no way formulated but has grown organically with special pieces of furniture, artwork and trinkets collected from around the globe which is what makes Oak House No.1 so different.
Paintings from India
Mostly all of the things in the house come with a story, a history, like the Indian oil paintings in several of the rooms, collected whilst on a road trip around India. Gary and Nicola, the owners came across an artist at the side of the road in Udaipur, bought one picture then sponsored him over the following years to paint others and send to the UK. Amazingly another traveller also liked his work some years later and the artist had a show in the UK. Not many Cotswolds luxury hotels can boast such history as that of Oak House No.1.
Rugs from Bangkok
The rugs in the sitting room are from Tibet these were found in a gallery in Bangkok whilst the owners were living there. The silk covered lamps and the portraits above the deep blue sofa were also found in Bangkok, then shipped back with several other items. Not unusual for Nicola and Gary, in the past whilst living in Provence they shipped two container loads of furniture from Bali to Marseilles and now much has arrived at their Cotswolds luxury hotel. The stories go on everywhere you turn, the little antique Indian glass art pictures found in Delhi in an antique shop, the runners on the dining room table from a trip to Bali, a one off bamboo inlaid chair bought near Venice.
Glass Art From Murano Venice
Glass art on the Mark Brazier Jones bespoke made display stand in the Cavalier Suite was bought from Murano, Venice featuring some wonderful pieces by Dutch artist Arno Arts. The pieces were found in a gallery on the Grand Canal whilst Gary & Nicola were on a motorcycle tour of Europe. The delicate pieces were driven from Italy to the UK by the gallery owner to ensure their safe arrival.
There is a wonderful and very early Grayson Perry pot in the breakfast room together with an original Andy Warhol picture of Queen Elizabeth from the ‘Reigning Queens’ collection and many wonderful Calum Colvin pictures. Gary, the owner has recently become an agent for these artists and also for Michael Forbes, a Scottish ‘pop surrealist’ (collected by Ricky Gervais and Terry Gilliam amongst others). You will see that this is no ordinary place, but somewhere that you can feel the intensity and see the obsession to all things beautiful.
Aside from the exotic there is a foundation of classic English antique furniture collected over the past 30 years, some wonderful quality mahogany dining chairs to sumptuously Mulberry covered wingback armchairs in the sitting room, all of this is overlaid with an arty and irreverent twist. Hanging proudly above a quintessentially leather topped English writing desk is an original Andy Warhol pop art picture of Queen Elizabeth from his ‘Reigning Queens’ collection (the royal family purchased the very same picture) and was purchased from Lord Jeffrey Archer’s private collection. Other Cotswolds luxury hotels simply cannot deliver the same high end quality of Oak House No.1, but of course there is everything that one would expect from a Cotswolds luxury hotel but with layers of style, class and spectacle, this is what makes this place so special. Other Cotswolds luxury hotels would find it difficult to match the sheer opulence of Oak House No.1.
Bespoke Modern Designer Furniture
Amazing bronze cast furniture from master furniture maker Mark Brazier Jones can be found all around Oak House No.1, his work is also in collections of Madonna, Sylvester Stallone, Brad Pitt and many others. Classic French chairs sit alongside 1950’s leather and chrome Eames chairs whilst in the sitting room there is an iconic table by Matthew Hilton. Oak House No.1 luxury Cotswolds luxury hotel certainly throws up surprises like no other.
